Unit 2-Realism and The Uncanny Valley

Realism and The Uncanny Valley

Realism in Animation is attempting to make art and literature resemble life in order to make it believable, however if a character is too realistic with just one aspect of it being just a little "off"(for example: lip sinking), it can make the over character very creepy and make it fall into the Uncanny Valley.

The Uncanny Valley was created by a robotics professor, Masahiro Mori in 1970, and he proposed that the more realist a non human object is, the more unappealing and creep it looks. There are two sides to the Uncanny Valley, one being a stylistic approach, making a character have a certain style that makes it more appealing, for example: big eyes, or making a character that is not human have human emotions. The other side of the Uncanny Valley is realism, making a character exactly like a human in every way, but this is more difficult as if one thing is "off" with the character or Animation it can fall into the Uncanny Valley.

However realism is very important in Animation, If there wasn't any realism the Animation or character would not make sense, and would not be as appealing as a stylistic Animation that flows the basic laws of physics.
