Unit 8

Reference of comic book layout (google)
Project Question: ???

Research:

Comic book layouts- They are used to help people figure out how to structure a comic page. Understanding how to structure the panels to fit the page can be difficult as sometimes the panel maybe to small for what you want to draw on it. However the layouts are just guide lines and there is the exact way that you have to draw the panels, but it is nice to use these as a reference.
Sonic Comic Cover.

Comic book Covers- The covers of comic books have to be very expressive, they have to be interesting enough to draw the reader in. A normal comic book cover will have a full illustration and the title of the comic, the illustration has lots of bright colours or an interesting pose that will draw the reader in and make them want to read it. Most superhero comic I have noticed used the primary colours and mostly blue and red, colours are very important as they can make the reader feel different things, red shows danger and gets peoples attention, blue is a calm colour that is one of the most popular colours in the world.

Comic books that inspire me:

- Sonic Comics (Archie Comics)
- The Amazing Spiderman (Marvel)
- Captain America (Marvel)
- MegaMan (Archie Comics)
- Lalins Curse (Webtoons/Isaky)
- Lumine (Webtoons/ Emma Krogell)
- My Hero Academia (Kohei Horikoshi)

Other Comic Artists:

Isaky- ( Link ) Her real name is Isabel Terol Martinez who is 25 years old, and she was born in Spain,  Isaky has only just started making her comic this year and it has already got over one million views. I love the style of her art and the way she draws her panels, that characters that are in the comic are very interesting and relatable, the story is very slow paced but give us just right amount of tension and Easter eggs to make us want to read more. Before making her comic Lalins curse, she made another comic that has two of the same characters and it a tie in to her new comic, and I enjoy how she doesn't follow cliches in stories, how most alien and supernatural entertainment is set in America so she has set her comic in Spain.
Examples of her work:

Character.

Another panel from her Comic

Emma Krogell-  Link ) I don't much about this artist over than her name and comic, She has made a comic series called Lumine, I really enjoy the art that she has and Krogell is really good at drawing wolves. Krogell's comic series is a drama series that is really interesting from the start as it jumps right in to the main character, that you really get to know in the first few pages, there are so many mysterious things about the story that makes you want to read more.
A sketch of her character.
Character sketches

Character final piece.
Materials I use to create my comic pages:

I use a Red colour erase pencil for all of my sketching, I use this as the red is not as harsh as the graphite, and when I scan my pages in I can change the settings in photoshop so that the red pencil doesn't show up. If the pencil is a colour erase pencil then you can rub out the the pencil lines.

I use a BIC round stick grip for sketches that I don't care to make about, with a pen you can't erase so if you make a mistake you have to live with it. This can help me have more control of my lines and to not be so worried when I'm just sketching, and I use the colour purple because its my favourite colour.

I use Uni pin fine liners for all of my inking, the pens last for a really long time and are water proof. After I draw my sketch in the red pencil I will go over the lines in one of these pens to make the lines stand out and to refine the messy sketches.

I use Pro markers for all of my traditional colouring, the come in a range of colours and are very nice on the page, as the colour is smooth and flat. They are mage by Winsor and newton, they are in direct competition with comic markers which is the two marker brand.

I use photoshop for all of my digital colouring, I will scan my drawings in using a printer and put them into photoshop. Once in photo shop I will create another layer on to of the scanned drawing layer, and I will change my scanned drawing layer on to a multiply layer so I can now use the other layer to colour us the ink lines of the scanned drawing.

I use a Graphics tablet if I want to draw straight into photoshop and create a artwork in photoshop. I really enjoy using my table as it is much easier to create drawings on a more expressive graphics tablet ( where you can draw own the screen) than a cheeper graphics tablet ( where you can't draw on the screen), for me anyway.

Key Things in Comics:

Strong Characters- Characters that have really good personalities will be more memorable and likeable if they are relatable, as not everyone likes that strong hero that can no wrong, some people like the evil crazy villain. Designs of characters are also important, as you don't want the design to be two boring or ordinary, however that maybe the arts intent to have a generic character that then changes to make him seem less ordinary. Antagonists are some times more important than the protagonist, as if there was no conflict there would be no story it would just be a character going about there day with nothing going wrong, however not all antagonists are evil world conquering super villains they can be just be people that interrupt the protagonist, like a bully.
Spiderman character illustration.

Sonic And Amy illustration.

Expressive poses and action lines- Comic artist have the same challenge as animators, making poses that look like there moving, however the animators get to make the character move but comic artist just have to give the impression of movement. Most comic designers will use action lines to help inforce the pose, if there was a punch the artist will draw lines to show where the fist has been. The poses for comics have to been very expressive, to imitate movement and to basically tell a story, this is some thing that I need to improve on.
Expressive pose of Spiderman.
Sonic comic page showing action lines.

Colours and inking- Colours in comics are very interesting, they can sometimes express emotions or make the reader feel a certain way. The flat colours are placed down and then the shading and lighting is what can affect the readers mood, so if the image is very dark and blue it can show sadness, if it is red it can show danger and panic, and yellow and purple can show calm and safety. Inking in comics is interesting, as for some parts of the shading and the black colours the artist will ink it full in black, this can help give a nice solid effect.

Black lightning with blue lighting.
The light blue can show power, but also calm making a very cool affect on the character an illustration. Compared with the ink, they use a solid black ink to create a ver interesting contrast of dark and light.

Spiderman with lighting
The over all colour that is in this image is a dark blue/purple this gives a very calm effect but also showing that it is night. However the small bits of light (the turquoise and the pink) give of a futurist affect, and the over all hue of the colours is ver pretty that can attract people.

Spiderman pencil to ink comic page.
The pencil sketches are very simple, showing the basic figure, some small action lines, and backgrounds. Where as the inked version has a lot more detail especially in the backgrounds, there are solid black patches used for intense shading like under Spiderman and on the other guys back, it shows that there is no light hitting the mans back or under Spiderman.

These concept art images have helped me learn how to draw children, and have helped inspired me to make this comic, as the designs are so colourful and vibrate which are very similar to my characters. I really like the poses and character designs, and how they all have very different personalities but can still get along in the story. All of the characters are very different but still likeable for different reasons.

Unit 1-More Characters

The characters of my story.

The story is based in a fantasy world that is parallel to earth however there are fantasy creature and magic that play a huge part. The main location of the story is a village, with a school that teacher the children of the village how to use magic, and how to protect the village. The stories main character is Zoe who out casted by everyone the village, but she doesn't know why, and the story is centred around her journey to become a wizard and earning acceptance.
Zoe's first design

Zoe Zenith Zike-  Young girl (12 years old) who is outcasted by her village for unknown reasons, and is a intense tomboy. Zoe has a special talent for causing trouble by making potions which she enjoys doing in her spare time while listening to music. Zoe is not the best at communicating with people as she was isolated for most of her life so her communication skills are lacking, often resulting in her saying whats on her mind at the time (as she would talk to herself).

Lin Weathery- The son of the general of the sky tribe(13 years old), as a result he is often expected to be the best at everything. However he is a slacker who wants nothing but to lay and sleep of clouds. Lin really enjoys music, playing his guitar and writing songs, as a result of his fathers support he is over confident acting very cocky when he specks. Also because of his fathers pressure he left his own village to join another.
No Picture
Oriana Flor- Is the only daughter of the queen of the village(14 years old), however despite her royal background she is fascinated with magic and becoming a wizard. Oriana holds lots of determination but can be sad when she doesn't do her best, she is also a workaholic so she is invested in the work that she does for school. As a result odd all the the desk work she does, it makes her less confident in the field, so she will most of the time freeze up in desprate situations.

Amelia concept art

Amelia Carter- Amelia is Oriana's extremely optimistic cousin who acts younger than she is (12 years old), who loves everything and always has a smile on her face. She loves to cook and enjoys helping her father in the bakery, even though her mother (the queens sister) would rather her to train to become a member of the royal guard. Amelia may break the forth wall from time to time but she is a extremely kind soul who can always see the best in people.

Old Ryu design

Ryu Pendragon- Is an exchange student from another village (13 years old), he is extremely hot temper as is always looking for a fight, manly to blow of steam. He is one of the strongest people in the school magic wise, there is something that motivates him(but its is unclear what). Ryu is extremely capable with fire magic as that what element he is strongest with, out side of school and fighting he enjoys painting (as Amelia suggested it) to calm his anger.
No picture
Raven Bloodwood- Is a highly sophisticated lady who is a senior student at the school (180 years old looks 18). Raven has an eye for fashion and loves designing clothes and often never wheres the same outfit twice, but is training as a healer wizard. She speaks with a very posh and advanced tone, as a result of her posh nature she is afraid of getting messy and having to do anything that involves dirt.
No picture
Callisto No surname- Is the brother to the queen (32 years old), he enjoys inventing and no being disturbed by people. He wants nothing to do with the politics of the village and prefers to not seen with the royal family. Callisto is the youngest of the three siblings, and lives with none one in one of the towers of the castle which is how he likes it, however he dose have a little social side when he works as a substitute teacher at the magic school.
No picture
Blaze- (6 years old) Is the extremely lazy fire fox-cat (none one nows what he is) who is friends with Zoe, after Zoe was walking around in the woods she found him on the ground next to a tree na dafter that Zoe to him in. Blaze is always seen with Zoe, either walking next to her or riding on her back, he has a very carefree attitude but is always willing to help.

Unit 6-3D objects in Photoshop

The process of making a 3D object in Photoshop

I use a tutorial that was found online to help me create the 3D objects in photoshop: http://abduzeedo.com/node/62900

  1. The first step was to use the rectangle tool to create a grid, and to then use the Elliptical Marquee Tool to create a circle section, then use use Filter- Distort- Sphereize.
  2. The second step is to select the sphere and hold command C and then hold command V to paste the sphere on its on a separate layer,
  3.  The next step is to go into Layers- Layer styles- Gradient overlay to change the colour of the sphere.
  4. Then use the magic wand tool and select all of the white squares and delete them, then duplicate the layer and rotate it to make an even better 3d effect.
  5. Next use a granted overlay on the back ground and make the style radius.
  6. Duplicate the layers and merge the duplicated layers, then use filter- blur Gaussian blur, and then resize it to create a shadow.
  7. Next use the inner shadow and colour dodge to create a light affect.
  8.  Then duplicate all the layers and merge them, and use filter- blur- gaussian, and change the blend mode to overlay.

My first attempt

My second attempt
Its some leaves

Here is link to the tutorial that I used: https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-create-a-3d-leaf-from-a-texture-photograph--psd-4071

I made this image using a texture of a leaf from https://lostandtaken.com, and I placed it into photoshop, using the warp tool to change the shape of the image into a more leaf like shape. I then duplicate the layer twice to more 2 more leafs, I then duplicate all the layer and then merge those layers to create one layer, using filters, blur, gaussian blur to create a shadow effect on the whole image. Next the two leaves that are behind the main leaf and use blur to make both leaves blurry, then turn them both into smart objects and select smart filters and use the black colour in to paint palette to make some parts on the leaf seem sharper than other parts. Use some benvel and emboss to create some lights and dark one the edges of all the leafs.

Making an animation using the 3D object.

I used my 3D ball that I had already made in photo shop to create an animation of a ball jumping using an image from goole as my base for animating the ball. I am really happy with how the animation turned out however I wanted to add more to it to improve it but the file wouldn't save so I had to go back to my original idea of just a basic ball bouncing.
Here is the image I used.

Unit 6- 3D Animation

The 3D Animation

2D concept art
The 2D concept art for animation is very important as these sketches act as blueprints for the 3D programmers on what the character or background looks like so they can model it in programs like Maya.
2D concept art for a character in Rio

The drawings are flat 2 dimensional images that can be placed in to a 3D programme and used as a background that the 3D animators can go over to. The 2D are used to help 3D programmers understand the character by knowing, what color the character is so they know what UV texture mapping to use, what shapes are use to make the character so they can make it as accurate as possible, and what volume the characters have as the animators need to give these characters and worlds life and one way to make them feel real is to give they weight.

An example of 2D concept art

What is 3D Maya

3D Maya is an auto desk software that runs on windows, macOS and Linux. It was originally developed by Alias systems but is now developed and owned by Auto desk, and is used to create 3D models that are interactive, and that can be turned into visual effects, video games, animated series or films. Evan some professional 3D animators and companies use Maya to create there animation, and some use it to create 3D models that they can then sell to others to use in the software. Maya was used by many professional companies, and was used on many of the the companies films such as, The Golden Compass, Transformers, Harry potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Silent Hill.

My Experience with 3D Animation
3D Animation for me is really difficult to understand as I have only ever worked in 2D, so it can make it really difficult to make the transition to a 3 Dimensional platform. The lay out of the Maya program was very different to Photoshop ( which is normal program) but there were similar aspects such as, Layers, and the overall color. The program had a lot of things that I did not understand, and too many things to learn especially when it was not preferred medium. Try to make an animation in Maya was extremely difficult for me, first we had to download a 3D model and use it fr our base to work on, the model that i ended up with was a very simple ball with legs, and we were then tasked to make the model jump on to a box. There were many problems that I faced such as, setting key frames, placing the box and moving the character away from the box, lifting the character in the air ( as it would just raise the floor along with character). However just because my experience with 3D Maya wasn't a very positive one doesn't mean it is not an effective program for professionals.

3D Gaming

3D games are interactive computer programs that are portrayal in a 3 dimensional space, and 3D programmers strive on make the graphics of there games the best it can be. The difference between 2d spirit games and 3d modeled games is the spirit only do want they are drawn to do they have limited animations as that is what technology was capable of, however 3D models in whole 3 dimensional worlds have a lot more movement and can a variety of things as technology advanced. The 3D models have whole exoskeletons that help them move like real person, even skin is placed on to the character to make them seem more human, however this can cause some 3D games to fall into the uncanny valley ( where character are too realistic and therefore very creepy in comparison ).
